How To Lubricate Your Equal-i-zer Hitch

Manufactured from the highest-grade American steel, The Original Equal-i-zer® Sway Control Hitch is designed to last a lifetime, so you can be confident in your purchase. An important aspect in getting the best performance and longevity from your Equal-i-zer hitch is proper lubrication.

Lubrication extends the life of the hitch, preventing rust and wear on the sockets, and provides easier hitching and unhitching because it makes newly-painted, torqued sockets easier to move. It also protects the finish on the hitch ball and quiets the noise coming from the hitch ball rotating inside the coupler.

Take a minute to learn how to properly lube your sway control hitch by viewing our infographic, and watching our video.

How to Properly Lubricate the Equal-i-zer Hitch (Video):

Proper Hitch Lubrication

  1. Remove tension from the spring arms by lifting them off the L-brackets.
  2. Swing the spring arms sockets until the spring arms are perpendicular to the tow vehicle.
  3. Remove the spring arms from the hitch head sockets.
  4. Using a high-quality cloth rag, wipe clean the friction surface areas of the sockets, top and bottom.
  5. Using Equal-i-zer High-Performance Lubricant (or a quality bearing grease), place a pinhead-sized drop onto the top of the socket.
  6. DO NOT use a degreaser such as WD-40 on the hitch sockets.
  7. Spread the lubricant with your finger or rag until it covers the entire surface.
  8. Repeat this for the underside of the socket.
  9. Insert the spring arms into the socket and rotate the socket back and forth.
  10. DO NOT lubricate the L-brackets or spring arms.

What Lube / Hitch Grease Should I Use?

High quality multi-purpose or bearing grease. We recommend using Equal-izer high performance lubricant.

How often should I lube / grease my hitch?

How often to grease will depend on how often the hitch is used for towing. For general use we recommend 3 times a year in the spring, mid-summer, and fall.

Where should I put lube / grease on a hitch

A thin, pea sized drop of lubricant should be added to the sockets to protect the hitch.

Why should lube / grease be used on a hitch?

Keeping the hitch maintained with lube will extend the life of the sockets and the hitch head.
