What is the Equal-i-zer Sway Control Hitch?

The Original Equal-i-zer® is a weight distribution hitch with integrated 4-point sway control. Its spring arms redistribute trailer tongue weight while friction at the hitch head and L-brackets helps resist side-to-side trailer sway.

Equal-i-zer models cover a broad range of bumper-pull towing applications. Select the correct model using actual loaded trailer weight and tongue weight together with the ratings and requirements of the tow vehicle, receiver, and trailer.

Which Equal-i-zer Hitch Size Do I Need?

The correct Equal-i-zer model depends on the trailer’s loaded tongue weight and gross trailer weight—not simply its dry or unloaded weight. Start with realistic travel-ready weights, confirm all tow-vehicle and receiver limits, then select the approved hitch configuration that accommodates the setup.

  1. Estimate or measure loaded trailer weight.
  2. Determine loaded tongue weight.
  3. Check tow-vehicle and receiver limits.
  4. Select the Equal-i-zer model whose approved limits accommodate the setup.
  5. Confirm trailer-frame and shank requirements.
  6. Install and adjust the hitch according to the appropriate owner’s manual.

Use the Hitch Size Calculator and Shank Size Calculator, then review the existing SKU table in the Specs tab. Selecting the next-largest hitch is not automatically better.

Equal-i-zer Hitch FAQs

Does the Equal-i-zer Hitch provide both weight distribution and sway control?

Yes. The Original Equal-i-zer combines weight distribution with Integrated 4-Point Sway Control® in one hitch system.

How do I choose the correct Equal-i-zer Hitch size?

Use actual loaded tongue weight and gross trailer weight. Verify that the tow vehicle, receiver, trailer, hitch, and related components remain within their approved ratings. Start with the site’s Hitch Size Calculator.

What causes the four points of sway control?

Two friction points occur in the hitch head where the spring-arm sockets rotate, and two occur where the spring arms contact the L-brackets.

Can I back up with an Equal-i-zer Hitch connected?

Yes, when properly installed and used within the system’s limits. Follow the owner’s manual for your model. The 6K–14K manual requires disengaging weight distribution before towing or backing across a significant grade transition that puts excessive strain on the hitch, such as from a flat street to a steep driveway. Read the 6K–14K operator-safety instructions and your model’s manual before towing.

Does an Equal-i-zer Hitch eliminate all trailer sway?

No towing product should be treated as eliminating every possible cause of sway. Proper trailer loading, tongue weight, tire condition, speed, tow-vehicle setup, weather, and correct hitch adjustment all remain important.

Sway Control Brackets

Rigid trailer brackets are mounted directly on the trailer frame. Using friction, they resist movement from the spring arms, working to eliminate sway and keep your trailer safely behind you. Brackets are height adjustable to control the amount of weight distribution tension on the spring arms, providing the optimum level of weight distribution and increasing braking and steering control.

Spring Arms

The spring arms serve two purposes. When raised onto the sway control brackets they transfer trailer tongue weight evenly to the tow vehicle. They also work with the friction sway control to combat trailer sway.

Downward Pressure

Downward pressure from the trailer tongue increases friction sway control. The trailer coupler mounts here, and can be hooked up from any angle, providing an easy hitching and unhitching experience.

Upward Pressure

Sway control brackets distribute weight by maintaining upward pressure on the spring arms. The amount of pressure on the spring arms is a factor of trailer tongue weight and vehicle suspension. The 4-Point Sway Control™ utilizes this pressure to combat trailer sway and provide the highest level of weight distribution, providing a more stress-free, enjoyable drive.

Friction Sway Control

Friction is enhanced by downward pressure from the trailer tongue and upward pressure on the spring arms. These opposing pressures come together to create an unequaled sway control system. This pressure combats trailer sway more effectively than any other sway control hitch on the market, providing you peace of mind every time you tow.

Weight Distribution With Integrated Sway Control

The American-made Original Equal-i-zer® brings weight distribution and Integrated 4-Point Sway Control® together in one towing system.

Hitch Info

Why Weight Distribution Matters

When trailer tongue weight is applied behind the rear axle, the rear of the tow vehicle can settle while load is removed from the front axle. Properly configured weight distribution transfers part of that load toward the tow vehicle’s front axle and trailer axles, helping restore a more balanced towing setup.

Choose and Adjust for Your Loaded Setup

Weight distribution depends on correct hitch sizing and adjustment. Use realistic loaded trailer and tongue weights, confirm tow-vehicle and receiver limits, and follow the owner’s manual for your hitch model. Recheck adjustment when the tow vehicle or loaded configuration changes.

How 4-Point Sway Control Works

Two rotational friction points at the hitch head and two linear friction points at the L-brackets resist unwanted trailer movement while the weight-distribution system is engaged.

Hitch Info

Points 1–2: Rotational Friction at the Hitch Head

Two rotational friction points are created where the spring-arm sockets rotate inside the hitch head. These points work with the spring arms and frame brackets as part of Integrated 4-Point Sway Control®.

Points 3–4: Linear Friction at the L-Brackets

Two linear friction points are created where the spring arms contact the rigid L-brackets. Together, the four friction points resist unwanted side-to-side trailer movement while the weight-distribution system is engaged. Proper loading, sizing, and adjustment remain essential.

One Hitch System

Integrated 4-Point Sway Control® works with weight distribution without a separate add-on friction sway bar. Use the model’s instructions for installation, hitching, unhitching, and maintenance.

Driving Conditions Still Matter

Adjust driving to road, traffic, and weather conditions. Integrated sway control does not remove the need for proper loading, tire condition, speed selection, and an appropriately rated towing setup.
